Frequently Asked Questions
Some common questions regarding neurofeedback
Why do I need neurofeedback in the first place?
The symptoms you are experiencing are the expression of a brain that is unable to self-regulate and to find its equilibrium. Neurofeedback is a learning process that shows the brain a better way to function. The brain is shown something it has never learned to do properly in the first place or, due to various life circumstances, has forgotten how to do properly. This is achieved through neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to (re)wire itself. Brain training allows the brain to find the best way to rewire for peak performance. The symptoms you have dissolve as the newer, more efficient way of working becomes clear.
Is neurofeedback safe?
The equipment simply reads your brainwave activity in real time and presents it back to the brain to show it how it’s performing. Your brain then learns to regulate itself. Since there are no electrical currents or magnetic charges put into your brain, the process is quite safe.
How do neurofeedback and medications compare?
Medications can have a fast acting and powerful effect on brain function. They can be very useful for acute symptoms but there is a downside. You have to take them each time to get the medication effects, not to mention, there can be side effects. Neurofeedback is a way to teach the brain self-management techniques that optimize brain function in a natural, side-effect free way.
Is it successful and permanent?
Success with neurofeedback is determined by your reports as training progresses. Also, reaching certain quantitative benchmarks could be a determinant of success. At Mindstate, we are huge proponents of overall wellness. These things improve neurofeedback outcomes. Things such as (but not limited to), a good diet, quality sleep hygiene, and physical exercise.
Since neurofeedback is a learning program, as the brain figures out how best to operate itself, symptoms are vastly decreased and often eliminated entirely. Training is then complete and the results are considered permanent for most people, but there are clients who may need occasional extra sessions to maintain those results.
Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?
We do not accept any insurance but am happy to provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement if it is covered under your plan. Coverage varies by provider but it is often not a covered modality and unfortunately many exclude neurofeedback specifically. Please check with your insurance and ask if biofeedback/neurofeedback is covered. After your initial consultation, the superbill will show the CPT code and diagnosis to submit to your provider.
